BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

Nanoscale crystals are present and essential in a wide range of applications in pharmaceuticals, polymers, metals and semiconductors, and porous structures with many uses in medicine, chemistry and catalysis.

You can kick start your career into the intersection of nanotechnology, nanochemistry and nanomedicine with this project:

Electron diffraction (ED) can elucidate the molecular structure of such nanocrystals, and has several advantages over traditional x-ray based methods. In this project you will learn to use and develop advanced ED methods in a transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Understanding how nanocrystal structure changes as the liquid environment around the crystal changes, is essential for any application of it. You will combine ED TEM with our nanofluidic platform where microchips with nanochannels make it possible to observe the nanocrystals under controlled liquid and temperature conditions in the TEM. Here you will work on optimizing our existing microchip system for use with 3D ED and learn to perform cleanroom fabrication of the chips, in collaboration with specialists and our start up Insight Chips (www.insightchips.com).

Your development of this new “Nanofluidic Electron Diffraction” method and system is expected to enable us to follow key processes in drug development where specific crystal forms are needed to control drug efficiency, and in chemistry where porous nanocrystals such as e.g. metal organic frameworks and zeolites are essential in catalysis and many other applications.

Your core task is to develop the capabilities with optimized chip platform and ED TEM methods, and to explore using the system through a network of scientific collaborators with knowhow in specific application areas in chemistry and nanomedicine. You will be working closely with the leading ED TEM group of Prof. Xiaodong Zou at Stockholm University.

The PhD will be part of Prof. Kristian Mølhave’s Molecular Windows group at DTU Nanolab (www.nanolab.dtu.dk/mowin). The group develops microchip-based systems for microscopy, that provide improved understanding of complex processes by combining key control and analysis methods with optical and electron microscopy for use in both basic and applied science.

The position will be filled as soon as possible and start must be before end of 2023.

Responsibilities and qualifications
In this project, you will:

  • Refine our specialized nanochannel systems in the advanced cleanroom facility available at DTU Nanolab, collaborating with other group members and our start- up Insight Chips (www.insightchips.com). You will be trained in microfabrication and develop our methods. Expect about 1 month per year on this activity.
  • Learn how to perform ED in TEM and optimize it for liquid phase electron microscopy in collaboration with the group in Stockholm.
  • Work on testing the developed system with collaborators on a wide range of nanocrystal samples and processes.
  • Mentor bachelor and master students with your supervisors.

The project requires numerous skills that you can learn, but if you have competences in them already your chances of success rise, especially in the core science topics being used and studied:

  • Transmission electron microscopy
  • Cleanroom Microfabrication
  • Diffraction methods
  • Chemistry of nanostructures
  • Image analysis and programming (python, matlab, or similar)

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

Assessment
Demonstrated competences supporting the above tasks is an advantage.

The assessment will be made by the supervisor team consisting of main supervisor Kristian Mølhave, co-supervisors Paul Kempen and Murat Yesibolati, and Prof. Jakob B. Wagner.
