The AECO industry faces a massive digital transformation that will change the way buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. New digital tools and processes emerge that promise to automate and optimize manual processes, defragment information and contribute to more emission-efficient building design.
The purpose of the project is to target in-efficient design and operation of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems (HVAC) in order to decrease life cycle GHG emissions. The hypothesis is that this is possible through facilitating HVAC information exchange across phases from design to operation. Hence, the aim is to combine building information models (BIM) with building operation data and building energy models to aid building designers with optimal HVAC design decisions and facility managers with automated continuous commissioning tools.
The Ph.D. project is co-funded by the EU-Interreg ÖKS, COWI A/S and the Technical University of Denmark.
Responsibilities and qualifications
We seek a PhD candidate who has a strong background in the interdisciplinary domain of BIM and HVAC, and with some experience in programming in either Python, C# or similar.
Optimally, you have practical experience from the AECO industry where you have worked with design and/or operation of HVAC systems, using BIM tools to support projects and your peers and to push the boundaries of the current practices.
Furthermore, it is an advantage to have:
- Experience with life-cycle assessments in the HVAC domain
- Documented knowledge of Danish building design practices and processes
- Experience with teaching activities
As a PhD student in this project, your responsibilities are to:
- Propose a frame for ontology-driven HVAC information management across phases in the AECO industry
- Develop ontology schemas for detailed HVAC life cycle information
- Develop data-driven models of HVAC systems using Modelica, operation data and BIM information and use the models to propose optimization actions
- Plan and manage your PhD project in collaboration with supervisors
- Collaborate with industrial partners and share your knowledge
- Dissemination your research at conferences and in the relevant journals
- Contribute to education through teaching and supervising activities in the field of BIM&HVAC
Good English language communication skills, both spoken and written, are essential. Due to the collaborative nature of the underlying funding project, applicants with sufficient communication skills in any of the Scandinavian languages are preferred.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
The candidate is expected to be self-motivated and to publish the project results in international peer-reviewed journals.
